What is Journey Church?

Journey Church is a brand new community of faith in the rapidly growing SE corner of Calgary, AB. Several years ago God put a dream in the heart of Journey's original Lead Minister Troy Hodgson to start a relevant, dynamic, positive, relationally authentic church that could become home for those seeking to walk with God. After much prayer, plenty of doubts and questions, and many, many discussions over coffee, that dream has become a reality. Praise God!

How long has Journey been in existence?

Just having launched in the fall of 2006, Journey is still a very young church. We continue the process of finding our identity in God's work in the world! It has already been an up and down ride, but we have experienced His hand moving and shaping us through it all.

Where is Journey located?

The main areas we have chosen to focus on initially are the communities in the far southeast corner of Calgary. The growth potential for these areas is enormous, and Journey hopes to have a meaningful and lasting impact for God’s kingdom as we grow alongside these communities. At present, we rent space to for our weekly Sunday gatherings in Mountain Park School , just north of the community of Cranston in McKenzie Lake. In addition, our Care Groups meet weekly in various locations around Calgary. Utlimately, however, we believe at Journey that our location is not defined primarily by our weekly meeting place, but by the presence of the Journey community as we go about our daily lives.

 

What are Sunday Gatherings like at Journey?

 

The atmosphere is very friendly, very casual, and very safe. You can expect some good coffee, good conversation, a fun and safe environment for your kids, encouraging music, and teaching from God's Word for all ages. You are free to participate in all this as much or as little as you're comfortable with. People at Journey are not "super-spiritual", just fellow travelers seeking God together on the road.

 

What are Care Groups?

 

We believe that our Sunday morning gatherings are a vital part of our growth as followers of Jesus. We work hard to make sure it is an atmosphere where those seeking God can find Him and find inspiration to become more like Jesus. However, we also feel that those larger gatherings do not by nature or design provide the kind of closely knit community necessary to live out our faith with fellow journeyers or our world the way God calls us to. So smaller groups have been created where the atmosphere is informal, the conversations are more particpatory, and the service projects are more frequent and focused. What’s with the name "Journey Church"?

We believe that the metaphor of life as a “journey” is one of the most appropriate pictures of what life in Jesus is all about. Journey Church is not a place for people who have arrived or feel they are finished in their walk with God. Rather, it is a place where all people who want to take their next step toward Jesus – and are looking for some encouragement and help to take that step – can find a home.
