Small Groups
Connecting together in weekly small groups (typically 4-12 people) on a regular basis for the purpose of growing to be more like Christ through transformational, authentic community is a critical part of life at Journey. We believe that small groups offer the chance for each of us to:
- Journey towards God - Grow deeper in our relationship with God
- Journey towards each other - Connect with others at Journey
- Journey towards the world - Expand our vision of what God can do through and in our lives
This happens through Bible study, spending time together to build relationships, the discovery and use of spiritual gifts, discipleship, prayer, sharing joys and struggles, laughing together, eating together, and by serving one another and the communities around us. We build relationships by doing life together.
This doesn’t happen by accident. Relationships rarely happen without commitment and a little hard work. To help facilitate that, we have identified values that we consider key for healthy small group relationships. We recognize that these are not an absolute standard. Instead, as we grow together, they represent targets for each participant in a Journey small group:
Affirmation: To create an atmosphere where group members affirm and encourage one another, build each other up in Christ and help each other grow.
Availability: To share time, attention and insight as well as material resources with others in order to meet needs and serve one another.
Prayer: To come together before God. In prayer, we feel valued and come to understand our own worth as we understand God’s love and power.
Openness: To be authentic in relationships, sharing our feelings, struggles, joys and hurts. To open the group to new members.
Honesty: To speak the truth in love so that “we will in all things grow up into him who is the Head, that is, Christ.” Ephesians 4:15
Sensitivity: To be sensitive to the needs, feelings, backgrounds, and current situations of other group members in order to build relationships.
Confidentiality: To keep in confidence what is said in the group. To respect opinions and differences thereby promoting openness.
Accountability: To voluntarily submit to one another for support, encouragement and help in particular areas of your life.
